Intro to forthcoming posts
Hey Guys,
We have just arrived in Swakopmund (a city with street lights, and the ocean just blocks away!!!). I'm about to post a few days of posts & pics. To make it easy I hope to remember to number the days. You want them in better order than Easter Island & Antarctica, right?!
Namibia is beautiful so far. I really hope i can return and just drive myself around this and some border countries. The trip has been frustrating at times, but I try to tell myself those are lessons learned (or something). My goal is to post the good stuff rather than complaints about tents, unnecessary rushing, and lack of opportunities to take pictures, or whatever.

Africa - Day 1
Hey Everybody!
It is almost bedtime in Windhoek (10:30pm) - must go to bed because it's my last chance to sleep in a bed. Starting tomorrow we are tent camping in the wild (yes, that does mean bush bathrooms). I wanted a real African adventure...think I'm getting one. It also means not so good Internet access - I can't get on my blog,but am trying this email to blog feature. Hope it works! Just know that I cannot respond to (or even read at the moment) your comments, but I will.
Tonight I met the people I will be traveling with - different ages and lots of laughter. That's a good sign! We had dinner together at Joe's Beerhouse. Photos of the inside are not permitted, which is a real bummer. It has all kinds of stuff to look at, including animals and animal skins. When I get a chance, I will check online for pics.
For dinner I opted for safety - a mushroom pasta. It was quite good. But at the end of the night I tasted a bite of Ostrich (pretty good) and Kudu (that's the animal with the long spiral horns). The Kudu was okay, but I don't need to try it again unless it's more well-done. I could have tried Zebra, and nearly did, but the people who ordered it didn't like or recommend it. So I passed.
The city of Windhoek doesn't seem to have much to offer (that's even according to the local guides). I was in town for about two hours today - not much open & it was really all about shopping. The most interesting encounters of the city were:
1. The chats with street sellers and watching people barter. I bought nothing, but it's so tempting!
2. I met an American girl at a lunch cafe who has been traveling by herself (often) for four years. How cool is that?!
No pics yet....just can't get online long enough to upload & I only have one of the street sellers anyway.

In Namibia
Hey Everybody!
After a bit of an afternoon nap to recover from the long trip, I am pleased to report that Namibia wasn't as hot as I expected. It was only about 88* when I landed at 2pm. And now, after 8pm there is such a nice breeze outside. I was worried the nights camping would be too hot, but if this weather holds it should be quite comfortable (you know, if I remember to shake my boots before wearing them to scare away any scorpions!).
The flight over was long, but not bad. The plane arrived about one hour early. Actually, each of my four flights landed early & left on time. Like that!
I have no photos for you yet. There isn't anywhere I can walk to from the hotel this evening, but hopefully there will be a couple pics by tomorrow night.
On first glimpse, the landscape is a bit like the Australian Outback, but not as flat, more green and the trees look taller. Windhoek is a mountainous bush area with palm trees. It is the capital (and largest city) of Namibia; population around 250,000. The country's unemployment rate is 52%, which the taxi driver explained to me (after he possibly "stole" me from another driver).

And so the New Year begins...
Hey Everybody!
I hope that 2013 has started off well for all of you. I am sitting near my gate at JFK (for about 30 minutes) - before I walk for 30 minutes because my flight is 15hrs long! It seemed the perfect opportunity to update this blog. You know, before I get behind again...sorry, but it's going to happen.
After much plotting and planning I am headed back out for more. It would ruin all the fun if I told you my exact route, but I am excited to report that this flight takes me to Namibia, Africa! Cross your fingers for good animal sighting!!
I will have Internet access sometimes and I will do my best to keep the blog updated. As always, thanks for stopping by! More soon....
